USFA & ACFA MEMBERSHIP

In order to fence competitively, all fencers must be a member of the United States Fencing Association (USFA). Annual USFA dues are $60 per year and the year runs from August 1st to July 31st of each year. If you join USFA after April 1st, your membership will run to the end of the following year (July 31st).  If you have 2 competitive fencers in the family, consider a USFA "Family Membership" which will allow 2 competitive and 2 associate members for less than it would cost to register each one separately.

ACFA Club dues are just $30 per year, plus $30 annual Armory fee, for a total of $60.  Club dues pays for USFA insurance for the club and your first patch. The ACFA year runs concurrently with the USFA year so ALL DUES SHOULD BE PAID BY AUGUST 1st each year.

ACFA members should also register for the Amarillo College Intermediate / Advanced Adult Fencing Class or the Youth Intermediate Fencing Class each semester.  Register for the adult class if you will be 13 years old before the semester begins.  Register for the youth class if you will be under 13 years of age when the semester begins.

You will need to fill out applications for both the USFA and ACFA.  Questions about membership should be directed to Coach Slaughter.

Amarillo College Fencing Patch

ACFA PATCH

You will receive one official patch of the Amarillo College Fencing Association (ACFA) with payment of your first year dues.  It should go on your fencing jacket on the "unarmed" sleeve, one inch below the shoulder seam.  ("Unarmed" means the arm connected to the hand that you DO NOT use to hold your weapon.)  The Monogram Shop will sew the patch on for a small fee.  Additional patches may be purchased for $4.00 each.

FENCING GEAR WORKSHEET

WHAT DO I NEED TO FENCE COMPETITIVELY?

Clothing & Miscellaneous

  • 1 Fencing Jacket, preferably front close
  • 1 Pair of Knickers
  • 1 Plastron (underarm protector)
  • 1 Fencing Glove
  • 1 Mask
  • Long Socks (preferably white or AC blue)
  • Tennis shoes or fencing shoes
  • Breast Protector (female only - NOT the 2 cup protectors - you must use the one piece protector.  There are two at the fencing salle that you can check out.)
  • Equipment Bag (Make sure it has 2 large compartments so that you can separate your equipment from your sweaty gear.  Otherwise, you will get rust marks on your clothing.)
  • Water bottle
  • Towell

Foil Equipment

  • 1 practice foil (non-electric) size 5
  • 2 - 3 electric foils (size 5) with German tips
  • German connectors if you buy German 2 prong body cords (This is the preferred choice at ACFA.)
  • French connectors if you buy French 2 prong body cords
  • Bayonet connector if you buy Bayonet body cords
  • 2 body cords (Most of the club uses German 2 prong body cords and you need German body cords if you have German connectors.)
  • 1 Foil Lame
  • Note:  ACFA suggests purchasing Visconti grips for your foils.  These are orthopedic grips like the ones used in the classes at AC.  They come small, medium and large.  Check at practice and find the size that fits your hand the best.  Specify right or left handed when ordering.

Epee Equipment

  • 1 practice epee (non-electric), size 5
  • 2 - 3 electric epees, size 5
  • 2 epee body cords
  • Note:  ACFA suggests purchasing Visconti grips for your epees.  These are orthopedic grips like the ones used in the classes at AC.  They come small, medium and large.  Check at practice and find the size that fits your hand the best.  Specify right or left handed when ordering.  A significant minority of national level fencers uses French grips in epee competition.  Please consult a coach first if you are considering using French epee grips.

Sabre Equipment

  • 1 practice sabre (non-electric), size 5
  • 2 - 3 electric sabres, size 5  (German connectors) (Make sure that you order competition legal saber blades or you will not be allowed to compete at tournaments.)
  • 2 German style body cords (2 prong)
  • 1 Sabre mask
  • 1 Sabre Lame
  • 2 mask cords to connect lame to mask
  • 1 overglove
  • Note:  Some sabre fencers use bayonet connectors and bayonet body cords.  Please consult with a coach first if you are considering this option.

Before you purchase any equipment, it would be beneficial to discuss your purchases with the ACFA Armorer, Will Willis, or a coach.  Will might be able to make some recommendations that might save you some money.

Fencers born 1996 or later should check with Coach Slaughter before they purchase any weapons.  Some fencers will need to buy shorter weapons due to competition requirements.

ARMORY FEE INFORMATION

The $30 of your ACFA dues that is credited toward the Armory fee covers all routine cleaning and maintenance on your weapons and bodycords.  this covers the cost of minor parts like screws, springs and tips.  It is your responsibility to maintain your equipment in peak competitive condition.  Our Armorer, Will Willis opens the Armory every Thursday at the salle from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m.  Please bring him anything you want serviced as early in the evening as possible so he will have it ready when Master's Class (Intemediate/Advanced Adults) starts.

The armory fee does not cover broken blades, bell, guard, or socket replacements, bodycord parts or blade rewiring.  The Armorer can help you pick out a replacement blade if needed, but please order blades which are pre-wired with German tips.  He can generally rebuild a wepon on the same night that you bring the new blade.  Bell guards need to be replaced when they become so dented and damaged that they become unsafe.  Deep dents can catch and break your opponent's tip, causing you a potential injury.  If an Armorer, Coach, or Strip Director tells you to replace your bell guard, please respect their judgment.  Guards cost between $10 and $20 and are cheaper than a trip to the emergency room.  Generally, sockets will only need replacement if you change connector styles.  Blades need rewiring if the wire breaks or the insulator cap inside the point breaks.  This takes about one week and will cost $10.00.  All rewiring fees must be paid before you can pick up your weapons.  Please remember to bring your money if you expect to pick up repaired weapons.
